World Cup 2010 – Day #1 tips

11 Jun

South Africa v Mexico

A tricky opening game to call, the Bafana Bafana come into the finals in good form, even though the have not been playing competitive matches. The standard of opposition may not be high but momentum is with them.

Mexico have also had an intense warm up, playing more games than any other of the 32 teams competing and it may do them some good. They had good wins over Italy and Chile, while giving a good account of themselves against England.

I can’t pick between these two and think the home advantage may just give South Africa the edge but I’m gonna go with an Over 2.5 Goals bet to start with. With the ball reportedly giving keepers and players trouble, it may cause more goals than expected.

Also with the new ball players should be shooting from all angles and their maybe a chance that woodwork could be rattled. Odds are available at William Hill for Katlego Mphela to do so, and we’ll have a small nibble on that.

1 point on Over 2.5 goals @ 6/4 (general)

0.5 point on Mphela (SA) to hit woodwork (William Hill) 20/1

Uruguay v France

Looking at the prices, France seems to be slight value, however with a unpopular coach and ill feeling towards to way they qualified, France are no ones favourites. With this in mind and the whole world watching, I suspect the French team may get some rough treatment from the officials and certainly Thierry Henry. He was sent off last time the played Uruguay in a World Cup and could be in for a tough match again.

As such I’m going with Henry to be booked at what looks like a cracking price of 9/2.

2 points – Henry to be booked @ 9/2 (William Hill)

Good Luck.
